Expert Training

SSY Trainee Scheme

SSY boasts a proud legacy which goes back over 140 years. In that time, some of the biggest names in ship broking have worked for the firm. Indeed, it’s fair to say that SSY has helped shape the ship broking industry that we know today.

Through our London Trainee Scheme, successful applicants get the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced names in shipping over a 12-month period. In addition to expert divisional training, we will also ensure the trainees are educated in the principals of shipping, as well as take part in networking opportunities and a series of port visits and vessel trips.

Due to our continued growth, we are now looking for an experienced Communications & Marketing Executive to join our Communications & Marketing team in our London office.

The ideal candidate must be a self-motivated team player with a keen eye for detail. Applicants must have relevant experience in a similar role. This role will primarily focus on:
• Creation including design and execution of digital campaigns (including video content) across all external social media platforms.
• Coordinate and be responsible for the global event management function.
• Day to day management of www.ssyglobal.com and group wide internal intranet.
• Liaise with internal departments across the global business to create and coordinate imaginative and impactful marketing campaigns.

You:
You’ll be a team player, have great experience and be confident in creating and coordinating marketing campaigns across all platforms. You are proactive and creative with a keen eye for detail and have no problems overseeing the day-to-day organisation of all external and internal content.

You’ll be someone who isn’t afraid to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in and you’ll play a key role in helping to redefine our marketing strategy. You’ll be flexible and happy to get involved in a wide range of projects across the organisation, working alongside the Director of Communications and Marketing and liaising closely with the senior management team across all areas of the business. In short, you’ll be pivotal in ensuring that our marketing and communications strategy aligns with our business goals and brand.

Vital experience:
• Excellent level of experience in photoshop, InDesign, illustrator and Canva
• Experience in event management / organisation.
• Excellent written and communication skills.
• Experience in managing CMS for intranets and websites.
• Proven track record in delivering successful content campaigns which have generated serious engagement and impact.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to work with key partners on all digital content output including the creation of new presentation and report formats.
• Experience in event management / organisation.

Location:
This is a full-time role based in our London office.

This is a full-time on-site role for a Ship Broker at SSY office located in Sydney, NSW. The Ship Broker will be responsible for day-to-day tasks related to Brokerage, Trading, Freight, International Trade, and Commodity Markets. The Ship Broker will be expected to work closely with clients, analyse market trends, negotiate contracts, and provide exceptional service to clients.

Requirements:
• Expertise in Brokerage, Trading, Freight, International Trade, and Commodity Markets.

Due to our continued growth, we are now looking for a Trainee to join our Chemicals team in Singapore.

Responsibilities:

• Gain a comprehensive understanding of the ship-broking industry.
• Assist in following up vessel's operations and itinerary. Learn how to anticipate potential problems or incidents that may occur.
• Communicate effectively and timely with various stakeholders, including vessel owners, charterers, port authorities, and agents, but also the fixing shipbrokers.
• Ensure that emails and other means of communication received are timely attended and properly handled.
• Learn and adhere to industry regulations, operational procedures, and compliance standards.
• Collaborate with team members to resolve operational issues efficiently.
• Support the counter parties on demurrage and other claims pertaining to the allocated or other shipments.
• Issue broker comm invoice and follow up outstanding broker comm invoice (if any).
• Duly update the in-house tracking software.
• Participate in on-the-job training sessions to develop practical skills and knowledge.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
• No prior academic background in shipping are welcome; willingness to learn, excel and work hard.
• Strong work ethic. This position entices working after hour office hours almost daily, and to monitor certain operational issues over the weekends. Time management skills are essential.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The Chemical Ship-broking department in Singapore is a multi-cultural environment, and we also have to daily liaise with our colleagues in Madrid and Houston. Our office in Singapore has over 100 employees and 19 different nationalities. Our clients and counterparts are based across Asia, Europe, Middle East and USA. Therefore the ability to successfully communicate in different ways is essential to satisfactorily develop the business.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. There is a very limited number of standardized procedures to perform the job satisfactorily, so is also essential to have a flexible, “out-of-the box” and open-minded approach to the work tasks.
• Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
• This trainee position involved a fully in-house and hands-on training, with the candidate committed at least 1 year in the operation, post-fixture and claims department before mutually discussing further career projection with the supervisors.
• Entertainment of clients may be required from time to time.

The ideal candidate must be a self motivated team player with a keen eye for detail. Applicants must have relevant experience in a similar role alongside a good understanding of the industry.

Key Responsibilities:
• Handling of all Post Fixture claims (Demurrage & Non-Demurrage) from receipt through to payment
• Checking that all claims are correctly documented and in accordance with Charter Party terms
• Providing advice to all parties on claims matters when requested
• Alerting all parties of upcoming Charter Party Time Bar Clauses
• Providing regular Claim Reports to clients when requested
