SSY sets sail with a new global brand for a new era

Global shipbroker unveils new corporate identity, new value system and a range of exciting new initiatives as part of major brand overhaul.

SSY, the world’s largest independent shipbroker, has announced that from today onwards, the global shipbroking firm, which has been known as Simpson Spence Young for over 140 years, will now officially be known as SSY.

In addition to the official name change, SSY has also unveiled a new global corporate identity which includes a stylish new logo, a new dynamic and interactive website (www.ssyglobal.com), a new corporate value system (Trust, Independence, Expertise) and a dedicated online portal (SSY Navigator) for its Research division.

Speaking on today’s announcement, Stanko Jekov, Managing Partner, SSY comments; “Today marks an important and significant milestone for SSY and I’m delighted that we’re able to share what we’ve been working on for the past 12 months with our clients and the wider industry. Broking is changing – it’s become much more global as a business – so too has SSY. Today, we are active in 24 global locations and we will continue to expand around the world. To support this future growth, SSY will unify under one clear, strong and global brand as we move into a new, exciting era for our firm.”

As part of the new corporate identity, SSY has also announced details of its new Trainee Programme which will begin in September 2024. Through the SSY Trainee Programme, successful applicants will get the opportunity to learn from some of the firms’ most experienced broking and research experts over a 12-month period. In addition to intensive “on the desk” teaching, the trainee brokers will benefit from a range of educational seminars, networking opportunities, port visits and vessels trips. Applications for the September 2024 enrolment will begin in February. The programme will begin in London before being rolled out to other SSY locations internationally in September 2025.

Speaking on the SSY Trainee Programme, Jonathan Bond, Senior Director and Head of Period (Dry Cargo), SSY comments: “SSY boasts a proud legacy which goes back over 140 years. In that time, some of the biggest names in ship broking have worked for the firm. Through the SSY Trainee Programme, we aim to attract exceptional, young talent and give them the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced names in ship broking today. Our ultimate ambition is to transform our new trainees into the next SSY shipbroking superstars”.

Additionally, SSY has also announced details of a new global charity partnership with Mercy Ships. Founded in 1978, Mercy Ships is an international organisation that uses hospital ships to provide life-changing healthcare to some of the world’s poorest countries. Throughout 2024, SSY and Mercy Ships will partner on a range of joint charity initiatives in key SSY global locations with the aim of raising both funds and awareness for the charity.

Speaking on the SSY/Mercy Ships charity partnership, Rupert Lawson, Partner and Global Head of Tankers comments: “As the largest, independent ship broking firm in the world, SSY wants to play its part to help promote Mercy Ships and its wonderful work. Through our various charity initiatives, we aim to raise as much money as possible, so that Mercy Ships can continue to bring transformational hope and healing to those who need it most.”
